The Brazilian public health agency has suspended the use of its erectile-dysfunction drug Viagra, the first in a new class of drugs called ‘antihistamines’, for a period of two years.
The drug, which has been dubbed the ‘female Viagra’, has been shown to be effective for a number of years, but is facing stiff competition from rival drugs in the U. S., in the European Union and Australia.
The suspension comes after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave the drug approval for a new indication for the treatment of a type of cancer called breast cancer in women.
In its letter to the FDA, the agency said that the approval is “sudden and unexpected” and that “we will not be stopping the use of Viagra until a review process is carried out,” adding that the agency will continue to monitor the use of the drug.
However, the agency said it was pleased that the drug has been approved for its use in Brazil and that the FDA is working with other pharmaceutical companies to help the public health agency in the future.
In a statement, Dr. Paulo Boag said: “The drug is approved in Brazil and Brazil is one of the countries in Brazil that have had the drug in the last 10 years. In the U. S., the drug is approved in a much higher number and the FDA has already announced the approval of the drug.”
He added that the suspension was “just one of several reasons why we are happy to work with the pharmaceutical company and the FDA to continue to work with them and to help to promote the availability of Viagra in Brazil and the U. S.”

Viagra South Africa has been suspended for three months from trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NSE) because of concerns it may infringe on a patent for the anti-impotence drug Viagra (sildenafil citrate).
